I decided I'd like to take a stab at the Dark Shadows contest
At first it started out as a sketch, I really didn't know if I would enter the contest. I figured I'd rather try semi-realistic than my comfortable style, or Burton-esque. I just thought... "What kind of portrait would he have hanging in say an office or over a mantle (etc)"... As the sketch got more detailed, I really started to like it
But... I didn't want to just color it with colored pencils. I was afraid that I wouldn't be happy with the finished texture. So, I tried something completely different: make up. Eye shadow, more specifically. This picture is probably 90% eye shadow. The papermate pen allowed me a comfortable inking style, a yellow pen for the details on his ascot, and a couple of colored pencils to add a little more color in his eyes and some texture to the hair... Oh! And a bit of marker for that little blood mess. I liked adding the "old stains" and "messes". I thought it help make it look a little more... authentic?
I thought it was a bit of a bold move, using a ... "medium" I had never used before. When I started I felt very brave, and quickly became comfortable with it. I actually went out the next day and bought a few more "palettes" to finish the picture X)
So, I suppose that's really it. I just tried to keep it simple, but add a little risk to it
Hope someone out there likes it.
